Keeping Your Car from Rusting

Rust can be a deadly disease for cars. Once your vehicle has contracted it, it can continue to spread as it consumes the entire body. Not only is it unsightly, but it can make your car less safe. Every car owner needs to be aware of rust. Though modern vehicles are often more resilient than older models, they still aren’t rust-proof, especially if you live in an area with wintery conditions or salty bodies of water.

Thankfully, there are actions you can take to keep your car from rusting.

Rust Prevention 101

For most of today’s vehicles, rust prevention can be done through basic car cleaning and maintenance. Most experts recommend washing your car every two weeks or so. While you might be able to get by with once a month during the warmer months, you should maintain a strict schedule during the winter, especially in states like Ohio where salt is used on roads.

Road salt can be highly corrosive, eating through your car’s clear coat and exposing your metal frame to moisture.

Additionally, your car should be waxed every 3 months. Though the spray-on wax from a carwash is better than nothing, it pales in comparison to a true hand waxing. Not only does waxing by hand do a much better job of sealing your car, but it allows you to find blemishes, chips, and scratches that you otherwise might not notice.

It’s important to spot these, as a break in your car’s coating can quickly turn to rust. If you spot a scratch or a chip, you will want to seal that as soon as you can.

In-Depth Cleaning and Touch-Ups

Though self-maintenance can do wonders in keeping rust away from your car, it doesn’t hurt to have a professional touch-up every once and a while.
